In November 9th of 2000, UNESCO declared the Archipelago of San Andrés, Old Providence and Santa Catalina as the international “Seaflower” Biosphere Reserve, becoming part of the 391 Biosphere Reserves in the planet. The Archipelago is one of the most isolated in the Americas and includes three small inhabited islands (San Andrés, Old Providence and Santa Catalina) in addition to several cays, coralline banks and atolls (South southwest Cay, Albuquerque, Roncador, Quenna, Serrana, Serranilla, among others) with a total insular area of 57Km2 and 300,000 km2 of marine area, approximately 10% of the Caribbean Sea.

The Biosphere Reserve "SEAFLOWER" must fulfill three basic functions:
a) Conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variability.

b) Promote a sustainable economic and human development from the socio cultural and ecological vision

c) To give logistical support to environmental related projects of demonstration, education and training, and of investigation and permanent observation in relation to local, regional, national and world-wide questions of conservation and sustainable development.

Without a doubt, this recognition integrates us to the natural and cultural patrimony of the humanity and represents a great opportunity to focus the sustainable development of the Archipelago, which guarantees the preservation of the natural and cultural patrimony for the present and future generations.

Your visit and your respectful attitude towards its inhabitants and the nature, contributes to the enforcement and conservation of the Biosphere Reserve "SEAFLOWER".
